CA Inter exams are over: what to do before the result

Published on

Congratulations: you got through CA Inter. The result usually comes five to seven weeks after the last paper; ICAI announces the exact date for each attempt.

The students who land the best articleships aren't always the ones with the highest marks. They're the ones who were ready on result day. Here's how to use the wait well, without burning out.

Week 1: switch off

Sleep. See people. Do nothing CA-related for a few days. You've earned it. The rest of this plan takes about an hour a day, not more.

Week 2: an honest estimate, and a plan for each outcome

Go through your papers and make a rough, honest call on each group: likely to clear, borderline, or likely not. Then plan for each case:

  • Both groups likely: follow the rest of this plan as it is.
  • One group likely, one unsure: follow it anyway, but keep your notes for the second group within reach. Under the new scheme you need both groups to start articleship.
  • One group likely not: look at the next attempt's dates now. For the January 2027 exams, ICAI's schedule has the form window from 3 to 16 November 2026 (with a late fee until 19 November) and the exams from 2 to 12 January; check ICAI's announcements for any change. Keep doing the CV and firm research below; they'll be ready when you clear.

This isn't pessimism. It's what stops you losing two weeks to worry after the result.

Weeks 2 and 3: ICITSS

You can't register your articleship without completing ICITSS, the four-week IT and Orientation course. Where the rules allow it, many students finish it during the wait, so they can join a firm the day they clear. Check your region's batches, and when you can take them, on the ICAI Board of Studies pages, and book early.

Week 3: a one-page CV

Keep it simple. Include:

  • your name, phone, email and city;
  • your CA status: your Inter attempt (marks go in after the result) and Foundation, plus your graduation if relevant;
  • skills you can prove: Excel, Tally, any work on the GST or income tax portals, any accounting you've done;
  • one or two lines on something you organised, led or built;
  • one line on the area you're curious about.

The free MSC CV Builder has templates for exactly this. Our CV guide shows before-and-after examples.

Week 4: a list of 20 firms

Mix Big 4, mid-size firms and smaller practices. For each one, note what work they do, where their office is, and one reason you'd join.

Read what current and past articles say on MSC's articleship firm reviews. Then ask seniors the questions reviews don't answer:

  • Who reviews your work?
  • How often are you sent to clients out of town?
  • What's the firm's attitude to industrial training after year one?

Some larger firms start articleship interviews before the result, so check their careers pages this week.

Weeks 5 and 6: sharpen three skills

These come up in articleship interviews, and in your first month at the firm:

  • Excel: pivot tables, SUMIFS, XLOOKUP, basic formatting and the shortcuts that save time.
  • Tally or any accounting software: passing entries, ledgers, and handling GST inside the software.
  • The portals: how the GST portal and the income tax e-filing portal work from the inside. A free walkthrough video is enough.

Also revise the basics firms ask about:

  • the accounting standards you studied;
  • audit concepts: vouching, verification and internal control;
  • GST and income tax fundamentals.

They want clarity, not depth. Then ask a senior to give you a ten-minute mock interview on these basics. Saying answers out loud is different from knowing them.

Should you take a short job during the wait?

It can help, if it's the right kind. A few weeks at a local CA's office or in a family business teaches you Tally and GST returns, and shows you what a client's books really look like. It also gives you something real to put on your CV and talk about in interviews.

Keep two limits:

  • don't sign anything that commits you beyond the result;
  • don't let it eat the hours you've set aside for ICITSS and your firm list.

At the end, ask for a short letter describing what you did.

Know the date rule before you choose a firm

Your articleship end date decides your first CA Final attempt. The two dates that matter when you join are 1 May and 1 November: the day you join can move your first Final by six months. The complete articleship guide explains it with examples. Read it before result day.

What not to do

  • Don't accept the first offer without asking questions. Ask about the work, who reviews it, and study leave.
  • Don't pay anyone for an articleship seat. A genuine firm doesn't charge for one. MSC never charges anyone for a job or a referral.
  • Don't vanish into your phone for six weeks. An hour a day now saves you a stressful fortnight later.

Your result-day checklist

  • Your CV is saved as a PDF, with your name in the file name.
  • Your list of 20 firms has a contact for each one.
  • ICITSS is done, or booked.
  • An application mail is drafted and ready to send. The articleship guide has a template.

Then, on result day, you apply to your first five firms before lunch while others are still opening Canva.
